Indigenous Perspectives and Nature Woven Into a Gritty Complex Novel - an Editorial Review of "Holes in Water" by Matsie Non

"Holes in Water" is a gritty, complex family saga that weaves together past and present, as Missy, the narrator, reflects on her father’s memories and the secrets of previous generations. The story is set in rural USA, with a strong connection to indigenous perspectives and nature, which are central to the novel’s symbolism and themes.

Missy, an adult married woman, spends precious time with her ailing father as he reminisces about the 1920s, his fading health casting a shadow over their conversations. Non skillfully captures the poignancy of these moments, exploring themes of family, loss, and female independence. Missy reflects on her own marriage and admires the strength of Marian, another key figure in the novel, highlighting the evolving role of women in a male-dominated world.

The novel’s pacing is reflective and measured, with occasional meandering through various themes such as family history, historical mystery, nature, and animals. This can sometimes make the narrative feel less focused, but it adds to the richness and complexity of the story. The hidden treasure mystery adds an engaging layer to the plot, while the end-of-life conversations between Missy and her father feel raw and emotional.

Although the dialogue at times feels formulaic, the strong character development and evocative portrayal of rural life and family dynamics hold the reader's attention. Non’s integration of nature as a recurring symbol deepens the narrative, reflecting the characters' inner struggles and desires.

Overall, "Holes in Water" is a moving exploration of family, memory, and the inescapable influence of the past, with an ending that leaves a lasting impact. Highly recommended for fans of introspective, multi-generational stories.
